**Calendar of Important Dates
pertaining to the Illinois Regiment of Virginia, the Kentucky settlements
the regiment was responsible for protecting, and what was simultaneously happening on the
east coast of the colonies.

August - October
- Lord Dunmore's
War against the Shawnee (The First Formal Military experience for many
of our Officers)
- Harrodsburg
Established
1775 -
April
- Hostilities
commence between the Colonies and Great Britain with the Battle of Lexington
and Concord, MA.
March
- Boonesborough
and St. Asaph's (Logan's) Station Established
June
- Battle
of Bunker Hill / Breed's Hill
1776 -

evacuated by the British
July
- The Declaration
of Independence is signed in Philadelphia

- New York
is captured by the British

Regiment departs for the Illinois Country

Lieutenant Governor Henry Hamilton retakes Vincennes
- Joseph
Bowman is promoted to the rank of Major. Abraham Kellar is promoted to
Captain and assumes command of the Company.
1779 -
January
- Francisco
Vigo brings word to Clark of Goven'r Henry Hamilton's Capture of Vincennes
February 5th
- Clark
and the Illinois Regiment set out from Kaskaskia to recapture Vincennes
February 23rd
- The Siege
of Vincennes begins
February 25th
- Hamilton
and the Garrison surrender
March 8th
- The Guard
detachment, under Lieuten't John Rogers, departs with Hamilton and the
other Prisoners for Virginia
May
- Spain
declares War on Great Britain
June 16th
- Hamilton
and Lamothe arrive in Williamsburg and are taken to the Gaol.
August
- By order
of Colonel Clark, Captain Kellar is sent on recruiting duty, his Company
is retained as part of the Garrison at Vincennes
- Major
Joseph Bowman dies
1780 -
January
- Plans
made for a Campaign against Detroit by Clark and his officers, Kellar's
Company remains at Vincennes
January - December
- Ten to
twenty thousand settlers move into Kentucky
May
- Ft. Jefferson
established and garrisoned by the Illinois Regiment to defend the Confluence
of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers
- Cahokia
besieged by British Captain Hesse and a party of Indians
June
- British
Captain Henry Bird and a party of Indians destroy Martin and Ruddle's Stations
in Kentucky attempting this assault.
August
- Battle
of Camden, S. Carolina
- Clark
calls up 1,000 Kentucky Militia for a retaliatory strike against the Shawnee.
The militia forms up with a small force of the Illinois
Regiment at the Mouth of the Licking River, Kentucky. Cross the Ohio
River, they proceed against the Shawnee towns of Chilicothe and Piqua.
A sharp battle ensues at Piqua and the Indians are defeated. Both towns
are completely destroyed
September

- Battle
of King's Mountain, N. Carolina
November
- Clark
returns to Virginia to meet with Governor Thomas Jefferson
1781 -
January
- The British
invade Virginia
- Clark
promoted to Brigadier General
- The British,
led by Benedict Arnold, sack Richmond, Virginia (Clark fights a successful
rearguard action in this battle)
March
- The Battle
of Guilford Courthouse, N. Carolina
June
- Clark
returns to the Illinois Country to try to organize an expedition against
Detroit (again!)
August
- Colonel
Archibald Lochry and his troops, en route to join Clark, are surprised
by Indians commanded by Joseph Brant. Lochry and his entire command are
wiped out
October
- Cornwallis
surrenders to Washington at Yorktown Virginia
December
- The Illinois
Regiment is reduced and Captain Kellar resigns his commission
1782 -
March
- The Gnadenhutten
Massacre. Ninety Delaware men, women and children are murdered
June
- Colonel
William Crawford's Defeat by the Indians
August
-The Battle
of Blue Licks. The Kentucky Militia is soundly defeated
September
- Clark
organizes the Kentucky Militia and, again, destroys Chilicothe and Piqua
1783 -
July
- Clark
is relieved of command by Virginia
September
- The Treaty
of Paris is signed, officially ending the War
December
- Washington
resigns his commission
1784 -
December
- The Illinois
Regiment is officially disbanded
